Saturday's Denver-North Dakota hockey game was marred by an awful incident on the ice. North Dakota senior forward Brad Malone skated toward Denver senior Jesse Martin with the intention of getting a hard and clean hit on Martin, who was trying to start a breakout for the Pioneers in their own zone.Suddenly, Martin put his head down as he struggled to control the puck. While his head was still down, Malone crashed hard into him. Martin fell in a heap on the ice, and play continued for a few seconds before it was blown dead. Martin suffered a fractured neck and has been hospitalized in Minneapolis since shortly after the incident, and Malone has been suspended one game by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. He will sit Friday's home game against Minnesota Duluth.
It's not a hit that's easy to legislate, but there's been a huge movement in recent years regarding player safety, and the WCHA obviously feels like there was enough here to merit supplemental discipline.
