The Rangers already have moved one of their most prominent players into the designated hitter's role, and now it looks like they're seeking another DH. Texas is "actively trying to lure" free agent Jim Thome, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. The veteran slugger would apparently form the lefty-swinging side of a platoon with Michael Young, who was slotted for DH duties when the Rangers signed free agent Adrian Beltre to play third base.
That would seem to be a dicey fit in certain regards. While Thome has extreme platoon splits, Young can reasonably expect to play every day. And perhaps he still would, as manager Ron Washington last week said he would get Young into the lineup at DH and all four infield positions depending on the situation.
"He'll be my designated hitter and move around the infield on days when I want to give people a day off," Washington said. "We will give him a chance to play first base. Whenever we get a chance to get Michael Young in the lineup, we will."
