Brad Pitt: Angelina & I Know Our Huge Family "Seems Extreme"

Six kids may seem like a lot, but to Brad Pitt, having a large family is the only way to go.

Pitt, 47, and partner Angelina Jolie, 35, are the parents of a famously big brood: In addition to adopted children Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, and Zahara, 6, Brad and Angie also have biological kids Shiloh, 4, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 2.

"I know it seems extreme from the outside, but I've always kind of operated this way," Pitt told the Associated Press in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, where he's promoting his film, The Tree of Life.

Pitt says he always wanted a gaggle of children after hanging out with a buddy who came from a large clan. "I had a friend who had a big family when I was a kid," he said. "I just loved the chaos around the breakfast table and the fighting and the ribbing, and the mom making pancakes for everyone or the dad making pancakes."

He went on to say, "I just decided then if I was ever going to do it -- this left some indelible mark on me -- if I was ever going to do it, that's the way I was going to do it."

And now he is doing it, in a big way. And Pitt, who clearly has fond memories of pancakes, says (not surprisingly) that "breakfast is my speciality."

Since becoming a father, Pitt says he chooses his roles more carefully. "I think my focus before was more irreverence, by nature," he said. "Most of all, I'm painfully aware that my kids are going to see these when they're older, and I want them to understand something about their dad, and I want them to be proud of their dad."

Seeing as how much Pitt enjoys lots of little ones underfoot, will six be enough? Angelina Jolie, for one, hasn't ruled out the possibility, saying last year, "We're not opposed to it. But we want to make sure we can give everybody special time. They're kids now, and can play together, but they're going to need a lot more talking in the middle of the night, like I did with my mom for hours. We want to make sure we don't build a family so big that we don't have absolutely enough time to raise them each really well."

Of course, Pitt and Jolie will also have to squeeze in a couple of films here and there, and Brad says that he'd love to reteam with Angie -- whom he famously met while shooting 2005's Mr. & Mrs. Smith -- for another movie. "We're not ones to repeat ourselves, but we'd like to, because right now, we're hopscotching with films so one can be with the kids and one's free to work," he said. "And why aren't we doing them together? Why aren't we doing everything together?"

So will the Jolie-Pitts find the time and energy to add another little one to their happy brood? If they do, one thing is certain: Brad will be more than happy to whip up another batch of pancakes.
