Andy Gray, Richard Keys Taken Off Air for Sexist Comments
Filed under: English Premier League, Sports Business and Media
Andy Gray and Richard Keys were disciplined Monday for derogatory comments about Sian Massey's suitability as a lineswoman for a Premier League game the commentators were working Saturday for Sky Sports.
Gray and Keys have been respected voices in soccer for the past 20 years. They also criticized the ability of former Premier League official Wendy Toms and a column written by West Ham executive Karren Brady in the Sun newspaper that day.
The men have privately apologized to their employer. Sky said the two have been warned and "reminded of their responsibilities." They will not work the show Monday night when Bolton hosts Chelsea in the Premier League.
"They (the comments) are inexcusable from anyone at Sky, regardless of their role or seniority," said Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports.

NASCAR President Mike Helton Confirms Points System Change Imminent
Filed under: Daytona Int'l Speedway, Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR President Mike Helton, Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton and Sprint Cup Series director John Darby held a competition update news conference Friday at Daytona International Speedway, confirming that the sanctioning body is looking at a "simpler" points system that would be introduced in all three national series for the 2011 season.
Speaking to reporters during downtime from a three-day preseason test session at the Daytona Beach track, the trio spoke on a wide range of issues. First, Helton made the news official that drivers must now select only one of the three national series to earn points toward a championship. He also indicated NASCAR was considering changes to the 1, 3 and 7:30 p.m. race start times introduced this past year.
Pemberton said that the proposed fuel injection systems would not be used this season but are progressing well in tests and Darby explained that the introduction of ethanol to fuel this year was actually an easier transition than when NASCAR switched from leaded to unleaded fuel in 2008.
The hot topic, unquestionably, was a change to the points system -- which would be the first since NASCAR formed in 1958 -- even if none of the officials would confirm what the new format might look like.
"We're in the middle of the conversations, telling the competitors where our mind is,'' Helton said. "The goal for some time is to create a points system that is easy to understand, easy to explain, easy to talk about but also be credible at the end of the season. So it's a function of taking the current one that has established credibility and come up with one that you can sit and have a conversation with someone and they say, 'well, that's pretty simple.' ''
"We're close. And we're getting a lot of good feedback from the drivers about tweaks that would go into that.''

Justin Bieber will make a surprise appearance on the feel-good ABC show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" on Sunday. In the episode, the singer meets the Brown family of Wellman, Texas, who are helping raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving after their eldest daughter Alex was affected by it.
The episode was shot back in November, according to AceShowbiz.com, and in it, Bieber not only pledges to give back to the cause, but also makes daughter Katrina Brown and her friends' day with some one-on-one time.
"So I'm really glad you guys can come. Every night we have a banner that goes up and it says 'don't text and drive' so every night all these kids see it so it definitely means a lot to me as well," he told the family. "We're gonna give $1 from every ticket sold to your cause. I always do this sound-check party and I wanted to invite you guys to come and hang out."
"I did not know what to do," Katrina admits in the preview clip for the two-hour episode, which also features Emma Roberts and NASCAR drivers Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle. "I did not know how to react."
Bieber also opens up a bit more about joining the cause. "It's been a big part of my life to influence others not to text and drive," he explained. "And every night when I perform, I have a video that comes up and it says 'don't text and drive' and it's me driving. It's just really important to me."
The encounter will also reportedly be featured in Bieber's upcoming 3-D flick, "Never Say Never." In a trailer released earlier this month, Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, opened up about how lucky he feels. "Me and the guy from 'Extreme Home Makeover' have the best jobs in the world," Braun explains in the new clip. "It's actually the most gratifying thing about the job. Little things go a very long way. You get paid to just make other people happy."
Bieber isn't the only pop star who works with the cause. The Jonas Brothers are also avid spokesmen for Allstate's "X the Text" campaign. "We're a part of the X the Text campaign with our sponsor Allstate, which is an amazing thing," Kevin Jonas told MTV News back in August. "So many teen drivers and drivers out there have accidents texting while driving, and it's such a [great] thing to bring awareness to this."

Ex-Kansas Athletic Director Lew Perkins Agrees to Fine in Ethics Case
Filed under: Kansas
The state Governmental Ethics Commission approved a consent decree signed by its general counsel and a Perkins attorney after a brief discussion about the amount of Perkins' fine. Some members wanted to impose the maximum of $5,000, but others noted that he'd cooperated with the commission's investigation and had himself alerted its staff to the gift and questions about its legality.
A complaint before the commission alleged that Perkins violated a state law barring state employees from accepting most gifts. He was considered a state employee because state funds paid part of his salary.
"I never acted with any intent to violate any laws or ethical rules," Perkins said in a statement issued through his attorneys. "It is time for closure and to move on, and I am glad to have this matter fully and finally resolved."
The commission agreed not to pursue the matter further. The fine is a civil penalty, but the commission could have taken the unusual step of forwarding the case to prosecutors to consider criminal charges.
"Both parties worked very hard to reach this consent decree," said commission Chairwoman Sabrina Standifer, a Wichita attorney. "It is to everyone's benefit. We didn't have to have a full-blown hearing, bring in witnesses, all of those expenses, so I think it's a good resolution."
Perkins stepped down in September, a year before he intended to retire, amid allegations that he improperly accepted perks, including the exercise equipment and free physical therapy sessions from employees of the university's sports medicine department, which is part of the athletics department.
Under Perkins' watch, several athletics department employees were implicated in an alleged scheme to steal tickets to sporting events and scalp them for profit. Perkins was not implicated in that scheme but he acknowledged poor oversight of the ticket operations.
Perkins did not attend the commission's meeting. Todd Thompson, the attorney representing him at the commission's meeting, declined to comment, but in the agreement, Perkins and the commission's staff said they wanted to avoid "potentially costly and protracted litigation."
"I regret that this matter may have detracted from the attention given to our athletes," Perkins said in his statement.
The athletics department declined to comment, and university spokesman Jack Martin would say only that, "We said at the beginning that the ethics commission was the proper venue, and they've done what they were going to do."
In the agreement, Perkins acknowledged that he accepted exercise equipment in 2005, at no cost, from Medical Outfitters, based in the Kansas City area. The equipment stayed in his home until 2009.
Last year, Perkins paid $5,000 as a rental fee on the equipment, something the commission took into account when deciding how much to fine him. The complaint did not mention Perkins' payment or other details about the gift.
Before Tuesday's commission meeting, its staff dropped one of two counts in the complaint against Perkins, dealing with the physical therapy sessions. But the evidence provided by some witnesses was not strong enough to prove the allegation, and the commission had trouble in obtaining the testimony of another, said general counsel Judy Moler.
The unrelated ticket scandal led to federal charges against six former athletics department employees and a former department consultant. Four of the former employees have pleaded guilty - two to conspiracy and the other two to knowing about but doing nothing to stop the scheme - and will be sentenced in March. A former employee and the consultant had change-of-plea hearings on a single conspiracy charge later this week, and a former associate athletics director is set to stand trial on a conspiracy charge in March.
Impotent CONCACAF To Plead For Fourth World Cup Spot

The December World Cup vote exposed the CONCACAF chief and his fellow FIFA executive committee members, American Chuck Blazer and Guatemala's Rafael Salguero, as nothing more than small-time gangsters, able to hold sway in their own little fiefdom but inconsequential at the varsity level.

Usher's 'OMG' Gets Celeb Endorsement As Song Of The Year
'It's undeniable,' Travie McCoy says of the track that topped MTV News' Top 25 Songs of 2010.
By Jocelyn Vena
2010 had some great jams, and all week, MTV News has been counting down some of its best. Everything from Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and Rick Ross' "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" to two of Kanye's West's killer My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy tracks, "Power" and "Runaway," made the top 10. But it was Usher's bombastic party jam "OMG" that rose to the top and came in at #1.
So what made that song such a party anthem? "Oh my God! That's exactly what I would say! Oh my God!" Pauly D joked about 2010's top party jam. "Dope, dope track. I love playing it. The crowd goes crazy when I play it. Usher's the man!"
Travie McCoy added: "It's a great song. It's undeniable, you know what I mean?"
"Dancing With the Stars" pro Lacey Schwimmer admitted that "OMG" was the track that got dancers, both professional and amateur, on the dance floor. "You guys got a great dance anthem," she said. "So be prepared for people who do not know how to dance just going to town!"
Producer Alex Da Kid gave props to will.i.am for the song's epic beat. "I love 'OMG.' I think it's definitely something different for Usher," he said. "And it still has all the dance performance elements Usher's known for, but it's something slightly different and done in a will.i.am kind of way, and it's different and that's why it connected to so many different people. It's a great song."
Celebrities also weighed in on their favorite jams of 2010, choosing everything from Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" and Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" to B.o.B and Hayley Williams' "Airplanes."
Why did you love "OMG" in 2010? Tell us in the comments!

NHL All-Star Game Broadcast Promoted Throughout New NBCUniversal Platforms
Filed under: NHL Media Watch
A "cross-channel priority" is an initiative identified by the network's marketing council to receive broad promotion across NBCUniversal's numerous platforms.
NBCUniversal has been successfully employing the initiative for big events such as the Olympics, NFL Kickoff, movie premieres like "Despicable Me" and the launch of "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" at Universal Theme Park in Orlando, Fla.
Now that NBCUniversal has combined with Comcast's media assets, the cross-promotional capabilities are larger than ever. The new NBCUniversal has 20 channels and more than 40 websites to use to promote its "cross-channel priorities." As a result, the 2011 NHL All-Star Game stands to benefit -- as could the NHL for years to come if it enters a long-term broadcast partnership with NBC.

Justin Bieber's Next Album To Capture Justin Timberlake's Magic
Songwriter Sean Garrett says former 'NSYNC star's success inspires Bieber's new project and also dishes on Beyoncé's album.

Justin Bieber may have declined the chance to join Justin Timberlake's label, but according to a songwriter in the know, the former 'NSYNC crooner is the inspiration for the teen sensation's upcoming album.
Songwriter Sean "The Pen "Garrett, who has been working with Bieber on the follow-up to the chart-ruling My World 2.0., spoke with Billboard about the direction for the teen superstar's forthcoming album, saying the project will feature more grown-up fare.
"What we're trying to do with Justin is to segue him into young adulthood," Garrett said of the project, which is also slated to feature production from hitmaker Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. "The one great thing about Justin Bieber is the fact that his fans are going to grow with him. So we want all the fans that started out with him to still be intrigued and excited about him, but we want to also stretch out a little bit and make the fans that are 22-23 years old love Justin as well. When Justin Timberlake went from the last album of *N Sync to his first solo album -- I want to say [we're aiming for] that level. That's the bar for the type of song, that level of 'Cry Me a River,' big records."
Garrett, who has crafted records for stars like Chris Brown and Bieber's mentor Usher, also said he's hard at work on Beyoncé's next project. However, the songwriter didn't divulge too much information, only revealing that he's "been working with her extremely hard ... she's my favorite."
While Garrett said the plan for his next outing is to angle Bieber toward a swiftly maturing audience, Bieber himself has refused to categorize his music, insisting to MTV News in December that he's just focused on creating quality records.
"Whatever comes out of my mouth is just what you guys are going to hear," Bieber explained of his hits. "I don't know, it's not a specific type of music. Whatever music I write, I wouldn't say I'm pop or R&B or country or anything: I would just say it's just good music,"
What do you think Justin Bieber's new music is going to sound like? Let us know in the comments!

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Marvin Austin kept mostly a low profile in the practice sessions leading up to the East-West Shrine Game. After sitting out this past season following his involvement in the agent scandal that rocked North Carolina's football program, he had a lot to prove Saturday in the annual showcase for college seniors.
So grabbing a late-game fumble recovery for a touchdown to punctuate a 25-8 victory for the East over the West more than made his week in Orlando worthwhile.
"I sat the whole season out. Everybody knows it," Austin said. "People thought I was going to feel sorry for myself. ... A lot of people talk about my talent. They don't see the work I put in to try to be the best. They (the NFL) say they just want me to be confident and keep playing hard."
That workhorse spirit was exhibited throughout an East team that dominated first major all-star game of the draft season.
Syracuse running back Delone Carter ran for a touchdown and was selected the offensive MVP and Richmond tackle Martin Parker had a pair of sacks and forced a fumble to take defensive MVP honors.
The East scored 19 points in the first half and recovered three fumbles. It also had a team safety.
Carter finished with 54 yards on 11 carries, while Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor had the best passing day for the East, going 4 of 5 for 59 yards.
Austin's highlight came with 3:41 left in the fourth quarter when West quarterback Jerrod Johnson of Texas A&M was sacked by Tennessee's Chris Walker inside the 2. The ball trickled into the end zone and was recovered by Austin.
Parker had 96 tackles this past season and 5½ sacks. He was projected to be a late-round pick, but said he ignored all of that this week.
"My goal coming down here was just to play a solid game and just show the scouts, (and) show the people what I could do," Parker said. "It never crossed my mind that I would go out there and be defensive player of the game. I'm really thankful and grateful for it."
The West managed just 14 yards rushing yards and had just eight first downs. Its lone score came on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Idaho's Nathan Enderle to Portland State tight end Julius Thomas with 2:44 left in the second quarter. The pair also hooked up for a 2-point conversion pass. Enderle was 6 of 12 for 45 yards.
The West's best effort on defense came from Oklahoma State linebacker Orie Lemon, who finished with eight tackles. He said he will let his play speak for itself regarding the future.
"I put it all in God's hands and I'll let him do his will," Lemon said. "Wherever he takes me, that's where I'm going."
The East led 19-8 at halftime, dominating the time of possession in the opening 30 minutes and riding the play of a stingy defense that had a pair of fumble recoveries.
West running back and Hawaii product Alex Green fumbled on the opening play of the game to set up a 16-yard touchdown run by Carter.
The lead grew to 9-0 with 8:59 left in the first quarter when Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien was sacked at his own 5 by Oregon defensive end Kenny Rowe. The ball rolled into the end zone and was recovered by Illinois' Randall Hunt for a safety.
Following the free kick, the East capped the first extended drive of the day with a 4-yard touchdown run by Penn State's Evan Royster.
Auburn kicker Wes Byrum, who had the winning kick in the Tigers' national championship game win over Oregon, connected on one of three field goal attempts in the first half. He hit from 25 yards and had misses from 27 and 44 yards.
The East held the ball for 18:32 in the first half, compared to just 11:28 for the West. The East also had 11 first downs, to just four for the West.

Continuing work on her hit show, Eva Longoria was all smiles on the set of "Desparate Housewives" in Los Angeles on Friday (January 28).
Clad in a cute pink dress with a little white sweater, the brunette beauty meandered about the ABC show's trailer area in between takes as she closed out another long week.
The sighting comes as there's much speculation as to whether or not Miss Longoria is indeed moving on after splitting from Tony Parker.
The 35-year-old has been seen spending time with Penelope Cruz's brother, Eduardo Cruz, which has kickstarted plenty of relationship rumors - though nothing has yet to be confirmed.

COURTSIDE FAB: Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Kanye West, & More Hit The Knicks VS. Heat Game
It was a star packed house at last night's big Knicks VS. Heat game at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Amar'e Stoudamire and co. took on Lebron and co. And the Knick fans and celebs alike were extra geared up to show Bron Bron they didn't need him on the team afterall.
Pics of Alicia Keys, her hubby Swizzy, Kanye, Tracy Morgan, and more taking in the game when you read on....
Well aren't they a sparkly twosome. Li Li Keys cute spectacles, a studded and sparkly cropped jacket with jeans, and matching sparkly booties to kick it courtside last night. Her hubby was equally as sparkly in his goldish shoes and hat and shades.
The couple held hands and cuddled courtside as they watched their Knicks win in a nail biter.
A few days ago, Swizzy threw Alicia an Egyptian themed (their son is named Egypt by the way) 30th birthday party at Casa La Femme during another NYC blizzard. Jay-Z, Beyonce, Gayle King, and plenty others still made their way out to the party despte the weather.
Looks like the new (again) parent had a fun night out.
B-ball fan Mr. West showed some love to the Knicks' biggest fan Spike Lee:
And got dapper while taking in the game. Lookin' nice 'Ye.
Tracey Morgan took in the...sights. By the way, he was in a little hot water after his recent "Inside The NBA interview on TNT. He was asked to compare his boss, Tina Fey, with her look-a-like, Sarah Palin.
The comedian replied “let me tell you something about Sarah Palin, she’s good masturbation material.” Teehee.
In response to the comment, TNT released this statement: “It’s unfortunate Mr. Morgan showed a lack of judgment on our air with his inappropriate comments.”
Doubt he cares much. He looked like he had some fun courtside with Howard Stern and his new wife Beth.
Magic Johnson was there too.
And Spike celebrated the victory. Fun times.

Having A Baby—Not Having An Abortion—Increases Your Risk For Mental Health Problems
Having an abortion does not trigger mental health problems, according to a Danish study of 365,550 teen girls and women who had an abortion or a baby between 1995 and 2007. In fact, what makes a woman most at risk for mental health problems is having a baby, the study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found. None of the women studied had a prior history of psychiatric hospitalization.

Carrie Underwood Makes Her Movie Debut in 'Soul Surfer'
There's no question that Carrie Underwood can sing, but does the 27-year-old multiplatinum recording artist have what it takes to be an actress?
Carrie's Care Bears -- and the rest of the world -- will find out the answer to that question when Soul Surfer, in which the Season 4 American Idol champ makes her movie debut, hits theaters on April 8. The photo above is our first look at Underwood in the film, and a brand-new Soul Surfer trailer -- available for your viewing pleasure on EW.com -- offers the first glimpse at the "Jesus Take the Wheel" singer's big-screen prowess.
The based-on-real life Soul Surfer follows sassy wave-riding teen Bethany Hamilton (Bridge to Terebithia's AnnaSophia Robb), who inspired millions across the globe with her quest to become a surfing champion after losing her left arm in a shark attack. Underwood plays Sarah Hill, a church group leader -- and Hamilton's best friend -- who helps the young surfer overcome her demons and tackle the waves once again.
Judging by the trailer, the role certainly suits the singer and she doesn't overact. Plus, it's a change of pace to see the American Idol star carrying a surfboard, though somehow we doubt that the Nashville native will be hanging 10 in the film.
Who knows -- if Underwood and her husband, NHL star Mike Fisher, stick to their word and hold off on starting a family, she might pull a Justin Timberlake and focus some of her energy on acting.

Al Saunders Hired as Raiders Offensive Coordinator; Defensive Side Still a Mystery
Filed under: Raiders, AFC West
The Raiders filled their vacancy at offensive coordinator with the hiring of veteran NFL coach Al Saunders but the team's search for a new defensive coordinator continued.Raiders new head coach Hue Jackson had hoped to interview New York Jets secondary coach Dennis Thurman for the Raiders' defensive coordinator opening but was denied permission, according to news reports. Jackson decided soon after becoming Raiders head coach earlier this month that John Marshall would not be retained as the team's defensive coordinator.
Saunders' NFL resume includes two years as head coach of the San Diego Chargers. He has worked primarily as an offensive assistant, including in his latest job as an offensive consultant for the Baltimore Ravens.
Jackson was promoted to Raiders head coach after serving as the team's offensive coordinator this past season under fired coach Tom Cable. Before coming to Oakland, Jackson worked as an assistant with Baltimore, where he got to know Saunders.
Saunders ran the offenses during stays with the St. Louis Rams, the Washington Redskins and the Kansas City Chiefs. Jackson plans to continue serving as the Raiders' primary play-caller but he'll have a seasoned hand in Saunders to brainstorm with and help put together the game plan.
The two will be tapping into a deep pool of offensive talent. Raiders running back Darren McFadden had a breakthrough season in his third year in the league and wide receiver Jacoby Ford made a huge impact as a rookie wideout and return specialist.

'Jersey Shore' Star Pauly D 'Nervous' About Heading To Italy
'I don't know what gyms are like over there, I don't know what tanning's like,' Pauly tells MTV News.

On Tuesday, MTV announced that for the upcoming season of "Jersey Shore," the cast would be hitting the road once again ... only this time, they're heading all the way to Italy.
If you think you're excited about the news, well, you should hear "Shore" star Pauly D talk about the gang's upcoming trip.
"I've never been to Italy, and it's always been a dream of mine," he told MTV News on Tuesday night. "I'm excited to see my roots. I have family in Italy, but I don't speak with them since I don't know the language. My mother still talks to them, though. [And] I know Vinny has family there. But none of us have ever been. It's gonna be fun."
Of course, no voyage of self-discovery is complete without overcoming a few obstacles. So while he's excited, Pauly is also aware that he and his "Shore" mates will probably run into the occasional, uh, cultural issues when they arrive in Italy. But he's more than ready for the challenge.
"I'm nervous, I'm not gonna lie," he laughed. "I don't know what gyms are like over there, I don't know what tanning's like, I don't know the food, and the language — I don't even speak Italian. Maybe I should get a Rosetta Stone or something.
"And they got some nice clubs out there, and the women ... they're real Italian women, you know?" he continued. "Since I don't speak the language, I don't know how I'm going to talk with them. I'm hoping the smile does the trick. The less words the better. I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Despite the cultural differences and the language barrier, Pauly said that he can't wait to start filming the new season — cameras are scheduled to start rolling this spring — mostly because it means he'll get to hit the road with his best friends, which, to him, at least, is the best thing about being on "Jersey Shore."
"I really love being in Seaside [Heights], I love being in Jersey and I love being at home," he said. "But I also love traveling, and with this, I get to travel with my lifelong friends and that's another memory we'll all have together."
Don't miss "Jersey Shore," airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

PGA Tour Rookies Hoping to Shake Jitters at Sony Open
Filed under: PGA
In a related story, drug stores in the Honolulu area reported a recent spike in antacid sales.
Anybody's first step is usually the toughest. In addition to playing the Waialae CC for the first time, the season's newcomers arrive at their new work place carrying a live well of human emotions that certainly include doubt, raw nerves and a degree of insecurity.
That's OK. Eighteen years ago, Jim Furyk made his rookie debut on the very same course and now has 16 career PGA Tour wins, a U.S. Open title and is the reigning Player of the Year.
That does not mean he hit the ground running. Actually, far from it.

Yankees' Offseason Has Been Heavy on Talk, Light in Substance
Filed under: Yankees, MLB Hot Stove, MLB Free Agency
When the Yankees move Derek Jeter to center field, they have to hope he backtracks as well as Brian Cashman has this winter.
Three times in the past few weeks, Cashman has had to come up with ways to explain away some quotes.
The Yankees general manager said the New York Daily News misquoted him when it reported he said Andy Pettitte would not be able to pitch when the 2011 season opens but could come back midseason.
He declared he wouldn't sign reliever Rafael Soriano as a setup man because it would cost the Yankees their first-round draft pick. Once the Yankees did indeed sign Soriano, Cashman made it known that he was overruled by ownership.
He was then quoted, at a fan function, as saying that he didn't expect Jeter to last at shortstop for the entirety of his four-year contract extension, with a move to the outfield as the next step. Cashman played the "out of context" card on that one.

Ashton Kutcher And Little Sister, I Mean, Step-Daughter Collaborate On Duet
Nineteen-year-old Scout Willis recently sat down with step-dad Ashton Kutcher to perform a song they wrote called "My Sober" for a YouTube vid. It's a sweet little ditty and I like the simplicity of Scout's voice over Ashton's humble guitar strumming, but I'm sort of distracted by the fact that theirs is technically a parent/child relationship. I mean, he looks like he could be her boyfriend or older brother, especially decked out in that football jersey. It weirds me out. [PopEater]
